A Clinical Analysis of Breast Tumor



Abstract
Definite diagnosis of breast tumor by means of pathologic examination on biopsy specimen is the most accurate and justified. Breast biopsy could have frequently detected breast cancers in earlier stages with the probability of imppoved survival in theese patients.
Clinical analysis and review was carried Out in 410 biopsied breast lesions at Dept. of General Surgery, College of Medicine, Hanyang University Hospital during the period 3 and half years (Jan. 1979 to Jun. 1982).
The results were obtained as follows;
1) Breast disease among women shows increasing incidence from age 20 through seventh decade in Korea.
2) Palpable mass was the most common symptom when present at hospital and mass with pain and mass with nipple discharge were the others.
3) The most frequent site of the breast tumor was at the upper outer quadrant, followed by the central area, upper inner quadrant, lower outer quadrant, and lower inner quadrant in order of frequency.
4) On histopathological examination, 410 breast lesions were classified as breast cancer(22.5%), abnormal physiology(31.9%), benign tumor(27.8%), inflammation(l3.9%) and others (4.0%).
5) Eighty four Out of 410 cases of breast biopsis were malignant lesion.
6) The peak in cidence of breast cancer patients was in the 40~49 age group(32.1%).
7) Male breast cancer occured 3.6% among 84 malignancies.
8) The most common type of breast cancer was infiltrating adenocarcinoma. Two cases of cystosarcoma phylloides were presented.
9) All patients of breast cancer were classified by T.N.M. system for staging to follow up surgical result. Stage I group was the most frequent as 30.9%.
10) Among 39 breast cancer patients with axillary lymph node metastasis, there are 53. 8% from the outer half of breast and 25.6% from central region, and 20.6% from medial half.
11) Seventy one patients(84.5%) were treated surgically and then adjuvant treatment was employed in 32 cases(45. 1%). Standard radical mastectomy was performed in 39 cases(54. 9%) and modified radical mastectomy in 12 cases(16. 9%).
12) Breast biopsy was performed by incisional biopsy, excisional biopsy or frozen section biopsy in operation room or O.P.D.
